Spelling and Vocabulary Lists

Hooray for Proficient Spellers!

Thank you for encouraging your child to study spelling words each night.  I know how busy our evenings get with practices, games, meetings etc., but I appreciate all of you for making homework an important priority.  I have heard many creative strategies for making homework part of the busy evening schedule.  Some strategies I have heard:

  1. keep the list, a notepad, and a book light in the car
  2. pre-test at the beginning of the week, so you focus on difficult to spell words
  3. study and master 5 words each night
  4. use SpellingCity.com
  5. What other study strategies work?

***  Spelling and Vocabulary list are available in documents.

Reading

Getting Better Requires Practice and Support!!!!!!!!

I have been teaching for over 20 years now (very hard to believe).  What I can tell parents through my observations and experiences is most third graders, although they are feeling pretty confident with their reading ability, still need and adult to support them during reading practice.  Third graders are still developing questioning, comprehension and decoding skills.  When I ask parents of my strongest readers what they do at home to help their child be such a great reader, they reply that they read with their child asking questions, helping to decode difficult words and truly engaging in the enjoyment of reading instead of making reading feel like a chore.  This being said, please support your child during at home reading times as much as possible.  Up until third grade, children learn to read, from this point on, children read to learn!

Math

Unit 1 and 2 in math focus on multiplication and division.  There are many strategies that we have practiced to help us find products and quotients such as math drawings, arrays, count bys and repeated addition. It is good for students to know these strategies, but the ultimate goal is to become fluent (memorize) in multiplication facts by the end of the year. We have already started working toward this goal. The students make flashcards to practice during class.  I try to give the students class time to practice and take a math timing each day.  The students whom memorize the multiplication facts through x12 will celebrate at the end of the year by having a Root Beer Float Party.

We are memorizing our math facts in this order:

5, 2, 10, 9, 3, 4, 6, 8, 7, 11, 12  – Please practice each day!

Class News and Updates

Jim Darcy Craft Bazaar – November 12

Dear Families,

Jim Darcy PTO would like our help.  Each year the students and parents in our classrooms donate items which are used to create gift baskets for the silent auction during the Craft Bazaar on Saturday, November 12.  The theme for the third grade basket is “Made in Montana”.  We would greatly appreciate Montana themed items to add to the basket.  Homemade food items cannot be included in the basket but store bought food items (jam, jerky, chocolate, honey, etc.) can be included.

Thank you for your donations!

Mrs. Helseth, Mrs. Stefanik, and Mrs. Jendro

    Ice Fishing

Hi Parents!  Please save the date (January 13).  Our class will be going ice fishing that afternoon.  We will arrive at the Helena Regulating Reservoir at 12:30 and we hope to fish until about 2:15.  Parents are welcome to join us.  You do not need a fishing license for this event and all of the equipment is provided.  Keep in mind that this is a weather dependent outing; if it below zero or if the ice is unsafe, we will not be able to go.
