Good morning! It was so great to get to talk to many of you last week. I love sharing your children’s successes and I can’t wait to meet with the rest of you this week.
Thank you for all of your help with homework. I know they all enjoy the math much more, but I believe the reading is even more important. Some kids are getting a little lazy on their reading logs: not filling in time read, or sloppily answering the comprehension questions. Please encourage your students to take their time on these. In addition, some kids are reading all 80 minutes in one or two nights. I would really love for them to read at least 20 minutes every night so that they are getting that reading practice every day.
We will not have spelling or homework next week due to the Thanksgiving holiday.
This week we will take our Unit 1 math test and continue talking about problem solving. We will also be reading Young Thomas Edison and focusing on the phonics skills of au, aw, al, and o. We will be talking about inventors and hopefully doing a little inventing of our own. I passed out spelling lists right at the bell yesterday afternoon, and I know I missed a few kids. We will make sure those go home today. Students have no other homework this week as they earned a “Punch it”. I will pay them for minutes read however.
We had a very exciting group of visitors last week who awarded us a grant of a little over $800 for board games. I ordered 55 games last night and we can’t wait to start using them in class. Games are such great learning tools not only for content, but interpersonal skills as well. Helena Education Foundation is so good to us! If you are an Amazon user, please consider adding them on the Smile feature.
Finally, I know many of you were here for the Veterans Day assembly, but if you were not many kids from 3S are in the video. Here is the link: https://jimdarcy.helenaschools.org/2017/11/11/jim-darcy-veterans-day-celebration/
